KOH TAKAYAMA

COLORED CLAY DECORATION

Jan.06(Sat) - Jan.14(Sun), 2018

Ryoji Koie tea bowl

Mr. Koh Takayama(b.1943-) is always absorbed in one theme.
An exhibition in 1990 was displayed with only huge pots. And in 2004 his huge plates were arranged. A several years ago I found him making some statues of KOMAINU lion-dog(Guarding lion-like creature that exorcizes an evil spirit.) And the number of the creatures increased day by day. They evolved every time I saw. Some of them earned wings on their back! Mr. Koh Takayama said to me, "I have a full and satisfying working life as an artist now."

One day he talked me he was interested in making tea bowls. He didn't make tea bowls before. So I asked him to show me his bowls someday. Day after day Takayama kept making tea bowls. He examined and tried to find out what was his tea bowl.

He said late Mr. Yuzo Kondo, his teacher told him an impressive thing. When Takayama started learning at Yuzo Kondo's atelier, he was making his own bowl for daily meals. Kondo dropped in and said. " A potter's work begins with making bowls and ends with bowls." That implys the simplicity of making tea bowls and the depth of the essence of tea bowls.

We will introduce Takayama's latest work. Ten tea bowls and five pairs of KOMAINU statues. We would celeblate the coming year of dog, 2018.

KOH TAKAYAMA

We introduce clay-colored work that was fired in an electric kiln. The marble pattern of the bowl emerges when he put two or three clay-water solutions in wet condition.

And we would like to show you his wood-firing work.

Kou Takayama has a snake-type wood-firing kiln. He put some tea bowls in a special space of his kiln. In a ditch(!) he made for blow the air into the center part of the kiln. The temperature there is not so high and the fired texture looks like BIZEN clay or NANBAN clay.
