Tori Yoshino tea bowl

We introduce 10 tea bowls made of ATSUMI clay in a modern style and a traditional style.

ATSUMI area is one of the old Japanese pottery producing region from Heian period to the Kamakura period (early 12th century until the 13th century). Osamu Inayoshi is interested in the old potteries which were produced in his home town.

After working at a ceramic factory in Mino, Osamu Inayoshi couldn't resist an impulse to create his own pottery.

In 2011 Inayoshi built wood-firing kiln with his friend. That was a good oppotunity to explore the substantial ATSUMI wares.

YAMA-CHAWAN(Mountain Bowls) ...disappeared traditional products
The simple and robust YAMA-CHAWAN bowls were made in SETO, TOKONAME and SANAGE regions. Mainly small dishes and bowls were produced there. These bowls and dishes have the evidences of stack burning. They were articles for daily use.

TOKONAME is famous as one of "SIX OLD JAPANESE KILNS" that was suggested by late Mr. Fujio Koyama. ATSUMI and SANAGE works look better than TOKONAME work, I think. But they disappeared in the long history. Tokoname pottery survived.
Tokoname was nearer to consuming region and convenient.
They kept on making and eventually their production changed to mass production items.

Glazed SANAGE wares were iron-less and showed ivory color... They were for precious pesons or gods. Pottery with no glaze were distributed at a lower price and a lot of debris were found everywhere.
Some Atsumi work were burnt well and covered with thick natural ash glaze and look like BIZEN wares.

Some tea masters loved YAMA-CHAWAN bowls that had good looking and no stacking mark inside.

Usually they baked a lot of vessel simaltaniously. So the vessels had a stacking mark inside. No mark vessels were rare. When people found a beautiful no-stacking-mark bowl, they took one as a tea bowl.
