TADAYASU SASAYAMA(b.1939-)

Ceramic artist in Shigaraki

Tadayasu Sasayama is one of the most famous ceramic artists in Shigaraki. He was a memver of SO-DEI-SHA(1048-1988), a group of avant-garde ceramic arts.
He has kept his activity as world-wide ceramic artist and educator. In 2014 a great exhibition of Tadayasu Sasayama, "Work of a talented antiestablishment ceramist" was hold at Shiga prefectual Museum of Modern Arts.

The theme of his life work is a house(where a human lives) and a tombstone(where a deceised person stays). Usually they are huge ceramic objets. He didn't make any vessels as table wares. But lately I heard he sometimes makes some tea bowls.

We asked him to show his tea bowls. He kinlldly showed me some round tea bowls with some house stamps. Those wood-fired tea bowls slightly covered with natural ash glaze are simple and beautiful "Shigaraki" wares.

For the exhibition in Gansui he made some small houses instead of guinomi cups.
