KOH TAKAYAMA(b.1943-)

Profile
Koh Takayama's atelier is located at a mountanious place in Mie prefecture. He owns large gas kiln and electric kiln and long snake-type wood-firing kiln. After learning the skill of celadon wares at late Yuzo Kondo's atelier, he went to see late Shoji Kamota in Mashiko. Koh Takayama studied some sculptural methods there.
When he was 24 years old, he build his own atelier near his home in Mie prefecture. As he was born as a son of temple master, he returned to his home and became a monk who made pottery at his atelier.
When he was 34 years old, he was impressed by a NANBAN yunomi cup at a gallery in a department store. Something grabbed his heart. He left home and went to TANEGASHIMA island for a year to learn about NANBAN pottery(Unglazed wood-fired pottery fired in a snake-type kiln).

For these three or four years he kept making KOMAINU statues only. (He usually makes only one item at once. One day his exhibition site was filled with huge pots. And some years after only some huge plates were shown.)
But when we asked him to hold an exhibition, he decided to make tea bowls for GANSUI. He began making tea bowls day after day. Hundreds of tea bowls...

He usually fires wood-firing kiln once a year. And he asked me to see his SHIGARAKI clay tea bowls. To my surprise he fired tea bowls like NANBAN ware. Upsidedown.
And he explained these tea bowls were put in a deep ditch in the kiln.
